bought a sata 3 solid state hard drive yesterday, to replace the sata 2 one. even though numbers-wise it's not much difference, some things are noticeable faster and smoother. :-)

also bought a ups (battery backup) unit. the power went out a couple of days ago, AGAIN, and I cringed. it's like turning the computer off by unplugging it - everytime that happens you roll the dice on whether it'll be okay when you turn it back on. :-/ so yeah, now when the power goes out I'll have a few minutes to shut everything down properly.

fucking power goes out more in my part of the city than anywhere else - what the fuck. it happens so often I've taken the time to make myself a 'power outage kit' so everything I need is together. that reminds me, I gotta go to the store and get more candles - severe thunderstorm forecast for later.

also need bacon. :-p

WHAT things are noticeably faster? i need to know whether i should bother...i think i've decided that i'll SSD myself when i get Windows 8 coz i'll be starting over anyway

the biggest difference is booting up and when things are loading. there's actually videos on youtube of two computers starting up with identical software but one has an ssd drive.

the hard drive I replaced was an ssd too - this one's faster. :-)
(and cost less than half as much)

win 7 has an internal benchmark and it scores a computer between 1 and 7.9 - my computer's a 7.6 overall, and this new hard drive scored 7.7.

the thing i can't take seriously about the windows experience number is "desktop performance for windows aero"...so if you do no gaming and have only on-board or an average GPU, it returns a low overall score which doesn't take into account the intended use of the pc

windows aero, like it's the end-all and be-all of performance

true, but they also have a separate rating for gaming graphics. it's like the old benchmarks had separate tests for 2d and 3d graphics, something like that. for some people win 7 is the most demanding software they have. :-p
